Death Penalty?
Louisville basketball allegedly paid former five-star recruit Brian Bowen $100,000 to attend the school. That is said to have occurred just months after the program was put on probation by the NCAA.
The Cardinals have been at the center of a number of scandals over the last few years, many involving Rick Pitino and the men’s basketball program.
He was relieved of his duties after the Bowen allegations, made in connection to the FBI probe into college basketball.
As Yahoo! Sports’ Dan Wetzel writes, because of the timing of the allegations here, Louisville could be considered by the “death penalty,” only ever handed down to SMU football.
Dwight Howard a Pain in the A$$
The former All-Star big man found out the cause of this injury today. It’s humorous.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports that Howard is dealing with a pain in his butt.
“Washington Wizards center Dwight Howard visited a specialist in New York and has piriformis injury, which is a muscle in the buttocks. The injury isn’t serious and Howard will continue treatment,” he reports.
Roy Williams denied!!!
The NCAA is known for making decisions that appear to be head-scratchers to outsiders. It appears UNC head coach Roy Williams has revealed one of those moves.
Today, Williams told reporters that he asked the NCAA for a special waiver to play an exhibition game against South Carolina. All of the money from the game would go to Hurricane Florence relief.
The NCAA denied the request, which Williams says left him “dumbfounded.”
Severino Confused???
Luis Severino came into Monday night’s American League Division Series game against the Red Sox wanting to pitch seven innings. He threw four solid innings in his Wild Card game start against Oakland, but wanted to go deeper against Boston.
That did not happen. Severino went just three innings, giving up six earned runs and seven hits in the 16-1 Game 3 loss to Boston.
It was a rough outing, made worse by some rumors swirling throughout the ballpark.
There was talk during Game 3 that Severino didn’t know what time the game started, causing his warmup to be rushed.
Herbstreit and Bama
Some college football fans were going at ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit on Monday night. Of course, this ended up being a mistake.
The ESPN college football analyst did not hesitate to clap back at these fans, who, as always, were accusing him of some sort of bias.
One fan tried to argue that Alabama wasn’t actually that impressive.
BuffaloRaptorsHockey @buffraptorsrh
You always talk about bamas strength of schedule In why they should make the playoffs, truth is they will play two ranked teams all year. That’s a joke, they play cake puff teams 9 games a year. Easy to be rested for the playoffs.
Kirk Herbstreit
@kirkherbstreit
You know what annoys me about you and your tweet? Ignorance! I don’t care who Bama played-I can tell they’re pretty good by watching them every week-Shouldn’t be penalized from being the CLEAR #1 team in the country because they’re up by 40 every week BY HALF against inferior opp
Kirk Herbstreit ✔ @kirkherbstreit
Twitter’s right I suppose..Bama must suck. We’re all idiots for thinking they’re really good. 😂😂 Amazing what people think.

Chief Wahoo Canned!
Before the 2018 season started, the MLB finally addressed one of its biggest PR issues. After countless seasons of the Cleveland Indians wearing uniforms with Chief Wahoo on it, they are finally retiring the logo.
The Indians have used the logo since 1947, but complaints about Chief Wahoo – centered around racism – sparked the league to push toward removal.
While the 2019 season won’t feature the long-lasting logo, Cleveland couldn’t officially abandon it because of the postseason. Well, the Houston Astros just put an end to the Indians’ run.
The Astros won 11-3 over the Indians in Game 3 of the American League Divisional Series, completing the sweep and ending the era of Chief Wahoo.
One Of The Umpires In Tonight’s Yankees-Red Sox Game Is Having An Awful Night
The Boston Red Sox are beating the New York Yankees 10-1 tonight in Game 3 of the ALDS at Yankee Stadium. Incredibly, umpire Angel Hernandez might be having a worse night than the Bronx Bombers.
Hernandez, a notoriously shaky umpire, blew three calls on close plays at first base in the first four innings. You have to try to be that bad.
Thankfully, replay overturned the mistakes, but that still is beyond brutal.

Bettor places $67K wager to win $670 on Warriors making playoffs
A Westgate sports book bettor placed a $67,000 wager to win $670 on the Warriors to make the NBA playoffs this season. The gambler would get a much better return on his investment by betting on Golden State to win the 2019 NBA title. The Warriors are minus 200 favorites to claim their third consecutive NBA crown and fourth in five years. And Westgate sports book manager and oddsmaker Jeff Sherman predicts a three-peat. “I fully expect to see what we’ve seen the last few years,” Sherman said. “Houston took a step back when it lost (Luc Mbah) a Moute and (Trevor) Ariza on defense and the fact that Golden State added (DeMarcus) Cousins for nothing. He can be postseason help if he’s even needed.
There are only six teams with odds of less than 25-1 to win the NBA championship. The Rockets are the 5-1 second choice and the Celtics are the 6-1 third choice, followed by the Lakers (12-1), Raptors (14-1) and 76ers (16-1).
LeBron James will try to lead the Lakers back to prominence as he joins a Western Conference team for the first time. But Sherman said their title odds are mostly based on their popularity and the amount of money bet on them and that their true odds are higher.
For example, Utah’s regular season win total (50) is higher than the Lakers’ (47.5) but the Jazz are 80-1 long shots to win the title.
“That’s because nobody bets Utah to win the title and we get tons of support on the Lakers at those odds,” he said. “Season wins are more indicative of the power ratings from each conference.
“The only thing that might close the gap a little is if Houston trades for (Jimmy) Butler and adds him to the team.” Short list of contenders
“I don’t expect this Lakers team to be a title contender this year. All the young players are going to need another year to learn from playing with LeBron. We’ve seen it in the past with LeBron teams in Miami and going back to Cleveland. There’s an acclimation period. It took a while to develop that chemistry.”
Sharp bettors wagered on L.A. to go under its win total, moving the number from 48.5 to 47.5.
Three-team race in East
On paper, James’ departure from Cleveland gave Boston a clear path to the Eastern Conference title. The Celtics lost to the Cavaliers in seven games in last season’s conference finals without All-Stars Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving.
They’re both healthy now and Boston is the minus 125 favorite to win the East over Toronto (plus 250) and Philadelphia (plus 350).
“I have a hard time seeing past the three teams at the top of the East,” Sherman said. “We’ll have to see how the pieces fit in Boston. Just adding talented players doesn’t automatically make you better. The best thing they have going for them is the best coach in basketball, Brad Stevens.
“He should be able to manage minutes and egos and get these guys buying into what they have to do as a team.”
The Raptors added Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green in a trade with the Spurs for DeMar DeRozan. The Sixers will start Markelle Fultz at shooting guard in Tuesday’s season opener against the Celtics after the 2017 No. 1 overall draft pick was limited to only 14 games last season with a shoulder injury.
Spurs’ last stand?
The Westgate’s two biggest NBA needs are for the Rockets and Spurs to go under their win totals. Houston was bet up from 54.5 to 57. San Antonio’s total actually dropped from 45.5 to 42.5 after a rash of injuries, most notably starting point guard Dejounte Murray’s season-ending torn ACL.
The Westgate also posted playoff props on every team. The biggest bet it took was $90,000 to win $50,000 on the Spurs, who’ve made the playoffs an NBA record 21 consecutive seasons.
“It’s fringe to me,” Sherman said of San Antonio’s chances to extend the streak.
In fact, Sherman’s best bet is on the Spurs to go under their win total, which he played at 45.5.
“I didn’t think much of them, as far as being an older 2-point shooting team,” he said. “The loss of Murray is going to be really big and the Western Conference got better from top to bottom.
“Outside of Sacramento, no matter who you play in the Western Conference is going to be competitive night in and night out.”

NFL Agent Says Legal Action Coming Against Fan Who Threw Beer at Tyreek Hill
As if receiving a lifetime ban from Gillette Stadium wasn’t bad enough, the New England Patriots fan who threw beer in the face of Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill has now garnered the wrath of one of football’s most powerful agents.
According to Adam Schefter, NFL superagent Drew Rosenhaus – who serves as Hill’s agent – has pledged to pursue legal action against the fan who threw beer at his client during an endzone celebration.
On the play in question, Hill caught a 75-yard TD pass from Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes with just over three minutes to play, and jumped into the endzone.
Hill was then faced with a barrage of middle-fingers and the aforementioned beer to the head.
It looks like the man, a 21-year-old from Mansfield, will be charged with disorderly conduct.
The Patriots wound up winning the game 43-40 on a game-winning field goal.
Earlier on Monday, the Patriots announced that they had identified the fan who threw beer at Hill and had sent him a “letter of disinvite” from future games at their stadium, adding that they had turned over the matter to local law enforcement.
The loss also ended the Chiefs’ undefeated run, leaving them at 5-1 on the season – though still with a one win lead over the San Diego Chargers in the NFC West.

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:
FOR REAL THIS TIME
Wade Miley is ready for take two. The Brewers left-hander figures to see more than one batter in Game 6 of the NL Championship Series when he tries to help Milwaukee stave off elimination, down 3-2 to the Dodgers. Miley goes back to the hill two days after being lifted one batter into Game 5 in a designed move by manager Craig Counsell. Miley hasn't given up a run in 10 1/3 innings this postseason. The Dodgers are going with lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu in a rematch of Game 2 starters.
GRANDY'S NEW GRIN
Curtis Granderson is still smiling, even with a big chunk of his front right tooth buried somewhere in the infield at Dodger Stadium. The Brewers outfielder chipped a tooth during Game 5 when his helmet came off and bumped him in the mouth on a headfirst slide into second base. Los Angeles infielders Justin Turner, Manny Machado and Brian Dozier tried to help Granderson locate the missing piece of his tooth, but they came up empty. Granderson posted a photo on Instagram on Thursday showing off his new grin and promising to be "cheesin' hard for game 6 tomorrow!"
WELCOME BACK
Boston got a boost when first baseman Mitch Moreland returned to the lineup Thursday night, a positive sign for the Red Sox as they play on in October. Moreland injured his right hamstring in Game 2 of the AL Division Series against the Yankees and didn't start again until Game 5 of the AL Championship Series in Houston, 11 days later. He immediately came through with two hits off Astros ace Justin Verlander. Moreland, a 2016 Gold Glove winner, made pinch-hitting appearances in each of the first four ALCS game

Duffle Bag Bettor needs Chargers -6.5
One big MGM bettor (previously chronicled for winning big on the Saints) took the Bears at +3 and +2.5 on Saturday, beating the Gronk news. Line is now Patriots -1.5. The same guy also on the Cowboys at Pick. And he hit twice Saturday, on Clemson -17 and Florida State at -9 and -9.5.
The Westgate Superbook opened with these series prices: Boston Red Sox -135 Los Angeles Dodgers +115
The SuperBook dropped Boston's series price to -125 after a big player dropped a six-figure bet on Dodgers to win.

View From Vegas on Saturday's action
Red Sox beat Dodgers 9-6, take 3-1 World Series lead: View From Vegas is they closed as +130 road underdogs (Over 8.5 despite scoreless first 5); 1st dog to win in WS, home teams/faves 3-1, over/unders 2-2; faves/dogs tied 15-15 overall, home teams 16-14, Unders 15-13-2.
No. 17 Penn St. holds off No. 18 Iowa 30-24: View From Vegas is the Nittany Lions covered after closing as 4.5-point home favorites (early Hawkeye backers who got +6.5 cashed on the road underdogs)...went Over the betting total of 51.
No. 7 Georgia beats No. 9 Florida 36-17: View From Vegas is the Bulldogs also covered as 7-point, neutral-site favorites in Jacksonville (game went just Over the average closing total of 52.5 — some bettors pushed with Over/Under 53).
Duffel Bag Bettor update . . .
Not a good Saturday for Vegas' most-followed bettor as he keyed his point-spread and parlay wagers on Purdue, which lost 23-13 to Michigan State. The game was a pick 'em, though DBB bought a half-point for reasons no one seems to understand.

In an extremely unusual move, Westgate Las Vegas Superbook released lines for the Rams-Chiefs game three weeks in advance. The offering also featured a record-breaking over/under total.
Westgate made the lines public on Wednesday for the highly anticipated Week 11 matchup in the NFL on the eve of Week 8 kicking off. Los Angeles is currently 7-0, while the Chiefs are 6-1. The two teams will meet on a neutral field in Mexico City on Nov. 19, and to say it's expected to be a high-scoring affair would be an understatement.
The Rams opened as a three-point favorite, but it's the eye-popping over/under — in addition to the early release — that had everyone talking. The 63.5-point total would be the highest in NFL history.
The previous record was 60 for a Christmas Day meeting between the Chiefs and the Raiders in 2004. Kansas City wound up winning on a last-second field goal that also made the over hit.

High-roller gambler wins $300,000 on huge parlay, could've won WAY more if it wasn't for a meaningless two-point conversion
With sports betting legalized and a number of states with open sportsbooks for football season, we've seen more stories of crazy bets—both won and lost—than most football seasons. Gamblers are suckers for the possibility of a huge payout of a parlay, though the likelihood of hitting one of these bets is really slim. Don't tell that to one bettor in New Jersey.
An obvious high-roller placed insane amount of money on two parlays last weekend at FanDuel's Meadowlands sportsbook. And the bets paid off. Two parlay bets totaling $2,000—one eight-teamer and one 10-teamer—on mostly college football, with a little NBA mixed in, netted this guy a little less than $300,000 in winnings. A 90-1 hit and a 233-1 hit on the same weekend? Some of the most incredible long-shot victories you'll hear about.
The scary thing? He could've won way more, too. Here are his bets:
Amazingly, just one of those bets didn't win, and it was a push—which means the spread hit exactly on the number, resulting in a tie. Notre Dame defeated Navy by 22 points, right on the number of this bettor's spread, and to be honest, that push should've been a win. With Navy trailing by 23 in the fourth quarter, the Midshipmen scored a touchdown and went for a two-point conversion instead of kicking the extra point, making it a more manageable two-score game instead of trailing by 16. Navy converted, making its deficit 15 points, before Notre Dame punched in a touchdown later in the fourth quarter to put the margin at 22 points. Watch NowDavid Leadbetter's Keys to Getting Out of the Bunker
So, if Navy had either kicked the extra point, or failed the two-point conversion, Notre Dame would've covered the 22-point spread—meaning this guy's payout would've been even more huge. How big? He would've taken home more than $500,000, as Notre Dame appeared in both of his bets.

Of course, the difference in winning $300,000 or $500,000 might not seem too significant to normal folks. But if you're a high-roller like this gambler, there's no doubt you'll be somewhat disappointed.

Navy Midshipmen wide receiver OJ Davis (86) catches a pass for a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter against Notre Dame.
Still, an amazing hit by this guy.

The deep-pocketed customer known as the Duffel Bag Bettor, for his knack of bringing cash to the sportsbooks in a duffel bag, was back in action Saturday, going around Las Vegas placing large wagers on college football. At MGM, he bet $120,000 to win $100,000 on Purdue to beat Michigan State and added a $50,000 two-team parlay on Purdue and Clemson to cover against Florida State, according to sportsbook manager Scott Shelton. That was just one book.Vegas Sports and Information Network radio personality Paul Howard reported that the same bettor at William Hill's sportsbook placed a $100,000 bet on Purdue, a $100,000 two-team parlay on Purdue and Clemson, and a $30,000 three-teamer. And Covers.com reported that the SuperBook also took a "large five-figure" bet on Purdue. Purdue (-2.5) lost to Michigan State 23-13.Read more: sharp-action-sports.freeforums.net/thread/5722/joes-top-pros?page=1#ixzz5VPFqcfhE
