NBA• The Houston Rockets entered the weekend at 8-1 odds to win the NBA title, behind the Golden State Warriors (1-3) and Boston Celtics (6-1). Jeff Sherman, who oversees the SuperBook's NBA odds, anticipates moving the Rockets' title odds to 5-1 if Houston acquires Jimmy Butler and thinks his addition would narrow the gap between the Rockets and Warriors somewhat significantly. "I have Butler worth about 2.5 points to Minnesota," Sherman added. "I think he'd be worth about 1.5 points on a Rockets team, because he'd go from a first option to a second or third option with Houston." • Three weeks into the season, points, fouls and free throws are all up. Through Friday, NBA games were averaging 225.3 points this season, up from 212.7 last season, and overs were hitting at a near 60-percent clip. Sherman said the totals have increased alongside the scores, and professional bettors are starting to target unders. He pointed to Saturday's Utah-New Orleans game. The total opened at 225 and was bet down all the way to 219. Utah won 132-111. • The average over/under total over the past five seasons was 205.8. This season, the lowest total to this point in the season on any game was 204.5, for the Indiana Pacers-Memphis Grizzlies game on Oct. 17.

The deep-pocketed customer known as the Duffel Bag Bettor, for his knack of bringing cash to the sportsbooks in a duffel bag, was back in action Saturday, going around Las Vegas placing large wagers on college football. At MGM, he bet $120,000 to win $100,000 on Purdue to beat Michigan State and added a $50,000 two-team parlay on Purdue and Clemson to cover against Florida State, according to sportsbook manager Scott Shelton. That was just one book.Vegas Sports and Information Network radio personality Paul Howard reported that the same bettor at William Hill's sportsbook placed a $100,000 bet on Purdue, a $100,000 two-team parlay on Purdue and Clemson, and a $30,000 three-teamer. And Covers.com reported that the SuperBook also took a "large five-figure" bet on Purdue. Purdue (-2.5) lost to Michigan State 23-13.Read more: sharp-action-sports.freeforums.net/thread/5722/joes-top-pros?page=1#ixzz5VPFqcfhEKind of an interesting play on Purdue. I get why he would make the wager, but Purdue just came off a HUGE win against Ohio State. Purdue has generally struggled on the road the last few seasons as well. Therefore, two things come to mind, one, letdown mode for Purdue after win against the Bucks and then going into State on the road to try and pull off a win. These to me would be hard to overlook and make a play for Purdue.

Anyone see the total points last night by the Warriors? Watching the MNF game and saw the GS score at either 92 or 94 and then saw it was halftime and I was like WTF. Checked the box score this morning and they posted 149 points. Crazy. Granted Thompson went nuts.

Record haul for Nevada sports books in September
The $571 million bet on sports in Nevada last month was the highest amount since the state began tracking the total handle in 1984.
The strong numbers could put a dent in the argument that expansion of legalized sports betting would put a dent in Nevada’s sports betting industry. Instead, it may have increased interest. Time will tell.
Depending on how you look at it, the books won (or bettors lost) $56.3 million, also a record, with football accounting for $44.34 million of that.

From MGM’s Scott Shelton, the Duffel Bag Bettor bet on Halloween (because he liked a Thursday game): $50K two-teamer of Toledo -19.5 vs. Ball State (won) and Clemson -39 vs Louisville. Plus a $20K 3-teamer with same two teams plus Minnesota -9.5 vs. Illinois.
And this from Patrick: The large player hitting MGM every week played high 5-figures on these bets: Rams at +1, -1 and -2 at Saints. The line has swung to Rams -2.5. He also bet the Chargers twice, at +2 and +1.5 vs. Seahawks.

Duffel Bag Bettor goes 1-3
He hits a $50K two-teamer of Toledo -19.5 & Clemson -39, but lost a $20K three-teamer of Toledo -19.5 & Clemson -39 & Minnesota -9.5 as the Gophers got pounded at Illinois. He also lost a $100K two-teamer of Boston College -2 (won by 10 over B.C.) & San Diego State -10 (beat New Mexico by only 8). And he had a low-6-figure straight bet on San Diego State at -10.

Usually when sportsbooks report big losses as they did Sunday, it's because there is a huge run of favorites and/or Overs, but faves/dogs are 6-6 ATS in Week 9 with Unders 7-5), showing that the public landed on right mix of faves (MIN, KC, CHI, etc.) and dogs (PIT, ATL, TEN).
NFL season-long stats as we’ve passed halfway point with Week 9: underdogs lead 70-60-2 ATS (53.8%) with 2 pick 'ems not counted, home teams 65-64-2 ATS with 3 London games not counted, home dogs 25-19 ATS (56.8%); Unders lead 68-65-1.
