Saturday is the $20 million Saudi Cup, the richest race in the world. It drew an international field that includes U.S. based runners Midnight Bisou, Maximum Security, Tacitus, McKinzie and Mucho Gusto.
It was announced that wagering on the race will be available throughout the U.S., but the takeout rates are high. Win, place and show betting has a 20% vig and all exotic wagering including exactas, trifectas, superfectas as well as the Pick 3, Pick 4 and Pick 6 will be at 27%. WOW!!!!!!

The Road to the Kentucky Derby makes a stop at Gulfstream Park on Saturday for the $400,000 Fountain of Youth (G2). It looked earlier this week that we might have a smallish field, but we ended up with a field of 12.
The field size might get reduced by one as Chance It (7-2) drew the 12 post and his trainer Saffie Joseph is thinking about scratching him and waiting for another spot, possibly the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) on March 7. We won’t know for sure until tomorrow.
Dennis’ Moment is the 2-1 morning line favorite. The Dale Romans trainee has not started since his disappointing eighth place finish at 4-5 in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) last November.

gftrs Saturday
Things are heating up with 16 Road to the Kentucky Derby races on tap over the next month, three this afternoon. Each of the three Derby preps are worth 50-20-10-5 pints toward entry into the Kentucky Derby (G1). Close to home we have the $300,000 Gotham (G3) at Aqueduct which drew a competitive field of 11 that will go a one-turn mile. The race serves as a local prep for the $750,000 Wood Memorial (G2) next month as well as stamping the winner a ticket to Louisville. Mischievous Alex is the 3-1 morning line for the Jason Servis barn. The colt won the Swale (G3) going seven furlongs at Gulfstream Park last out. At Tampa Bay Downs it is the marquee event of their meeting, the $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G2) which drew a field of 12 that will go 1 1/16 miles. Sole Volante is the 2-1 morning line favorite off a very impressive score in the Sam F. Davis (G3) last out over the Tampa Bay Downs main track. He looks like a legit candidate to be a major player on the first Saturday of May. The $400,000 San Felipe (G2) at Santa Anita of course features a few Bob Baffert runners. The trainer sends out 6-5 morning line favorite Authentic and 9-5 second choice Thousand Words. Among their foes is last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Storm the Court and Honor A.P. who makes his stakes debut. While the three Derby preps take center stage, there is plenty of other great action through the country today. There are two Grade 1 races at Santa Anita—the $400,000 Frank E. Kilroe and the $600,000 Santa Anita Handicap. There are three supporting stakes on the Aqueduct card and at Tampa Bay four stakes in addition to the Tampa Bay Derby.

gftrs Authentic proves the real deal in San Felipe Stakes win
Put to the test Saturday in the Santa Anita Park stretch, Authentic didn’t dip, duck or dodge as when last seen on the 2020 Kentucky Derby trail. The Bob Baffert trainee proved he’s the real deal by winning the Grade 2, $400,000 San Felipe Stakes.
Aside from a mild bobble at the start, the Into Mischief colt, now 3-for-3 in his young career, led the entire way, finishing up 2 1/4-lengths in front after turning back a mild bid from Honor A. P. Storm the Court was another 1 1/2-lengths back in third and Thousand Words completed the superfecta.
"Turning for home I saw Mike Smith coming with that good horse [Honor A.P.] and I said, 'We'll see what he's made of.' I was hoping he wouldn't do his shenanigans."
With Drayden Van Dyke aboard, Authentic completed 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:43.56.
Just as impressive if not more so....
Baffert unveils Gamine, 'a superstar in the making'
Before Bob Baffert-trained 3-year-old filly Gamine made her debut Saturday afternoon at Santa Anita Park, the respected clocker Gary Young told XBTV, “She’ll be 1-9, and she will run like a 1-9 shot.”
That she did.
The $1.8 million sales topper lived up to the expectations not just of Young but of her many backers at the window, coasting down the lane of a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight event for fillies 3 and up.
All Gamine’s rivals were fellow sophomores, but this race wasn’t about the competition. After getting away cleanly from the gate, Gamine, a daughter of Into Mischief campaigned by Michael Lund Petersen, was never pressured.
“I always get nervous the first time when I know I have a superstar in a making," Baffert told TVG. "Sometimes they can work great, and in the afternoon they just don’t show up."
