14-race card on Saturday at Gulfstream Park
The Triple Crown trail turns it up a notch on Saturday when the Kentucky Derby Championship Series continues with the Fountain of Youth S. (G2) at Gulfstream Park. The Fountain of Youth is one of nine stakes (eight graded) on the 14-race Gulfstream card that begins at 11:30am ET.

5 runners worthy of attention this weekAs Time Goes By
A rapidly improving daughter of American Pharoah out of the Grade 1-winning mare Take Charge Lady, As Time Goes By turned heads with a dominant allowance victory at Santa Anita two months ago. After tracking the pace from second place, As Time Goes By seized command and drew off with authority to win by nine lengths with a 102 Brisnet Speed rating. Trained by Bob Baffert, As Time Goes By will make her stakes debut in Saturday’s eighth race at Santa Anita, the Beholder Mile (G1, post time 4:20 p.m. ET). The field is formidable, with Preakness (G1) winner Swiss Skydiver the horse to beat in her first start of the season. But As Time Goes By has been training strongly, and Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith is named to ride. Don’t be surprised if she’s in the hunt for victory down the homestretch. Caddo River
Just how impressive was Caddo River in the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park two months ago? Well, the Brad Cox trainee had no difficulty securing the lead, and down the stretch he pulled clear with his ears pricked to win under a hand ride by 10 1/4 lengths. Future Saudi Derby runner-up Cowan and Tampa Bay Derby (G2) third-place finisher Moonlite Strike were among his soundly beaten rivals. Caddo River will face tougher competition than ever in Saturday’s 11th race at Oaklawn, the Rebel (G2, post time 6:16 p.m.), but I’m confident he can handle the jump in class. Caddo River looms as the “speed of the speed” on paper and will be difficult to catch if he breaks alertly from the rail draw. Concert Tour
If anyone can defeat Caddo River in the Smarty Jones, it’s surely Concert Tour, who has gone 2-for-2 under the care of Bob Baffert. The son of Street Sense most recently battled to a gritty victory in the San Vicente (G2), and while he’s never run farther than seven furlongs, he’s bred to stretch out and is training strongly for his route debut. Baffert has already won the Rebel seven times since 2010, so Concert Tour is widely expected to deliver a big effort on Saturday. Harvest Moon
Swiss Skydiver is the big name in the Beholder Mile, and As Time Goes By is the exciting up-and-comer, so Harvest Moon might get lost in the shuffle. But that would be a mistake, because the daughter of Uncle Mo has the potential to shine this season. As a three-year-old in 2020, Harvest Moon was one of the best fillies on the Cailfornia circuit, winning the Torrey Pines (G3) against her own age group before battling to victory in the Zenyatta (G2) against older rivals. For her final start of the season, Harvest Moon stepped up in class for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) and ran a big race in defeat, dueling for the lead through testing fractions of :23.11, :46.03, and 1:09.94 before settling for fourth, beaten just 2 1/2 lengths by Grade 1 winners Monomoy Girl, Valiance, and Dunbar Road. I’m excited to see what Harvest Moon can accomplish in 2021. I’m confident the Simon Callaghan trainee will win a Grade 1 before the year is out, with the Beholder Mile looming as an early possibility. Silver State
It’s safe to say Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen has Silver State on a roll. Placed twice on the 2019-20 Road to the Kentucky Derby, Silver State has gone 3-for-3 since returning from a layoff last fall. On Jan. 23, the improving son of Hard Spun showed tenacity to rally and win the Fifth Season Stakes at Oaklawn by a nose over multiple stakes winners Hunka Burning Love and Night Ops. Silver State will try to keep his momentum going in Saturday’s seventh race at Oaklawn, the Essex Handicap (post time 4:08 p.m. ET). There’s plenty of quality in the field; in fact, five of his six rivals are proven graded stakes winners. But Silver State is the only runner entering off a victory, so the time may be ripe for Silver State to snatch his first graded stakes success. Recent Winners Prevalence
After missing a scheduled start in February due to an illness, Prevalence returned none the worse for wear in a one-mile allowance optional claiming race on Thursday at Gulfstream Park. Favored at 1-10 off a stunning 8 1/2-length debut victory at Gulfstream, Prevalance had to work a little harder in his second run under colors, but nevertheless secured the victory in clear-cut fashion. After tracking fractions of :23.90, :46.35, and 1:10.74, Prevalence took command at the top of the stretch and edged clear under a vigorous hand ride to win by three lengths in 1:35.82. For good measure, Prevalance casually galloped out another furlong after the finish line in approximately :14 flat, completing 1 1/8 miles in 1:49 4/5. Tentative plans call for the son of Medaglia d’Oro to tackle a road to the Kentucky Derby prep race next month, and I’m excited to see how he fares.

Race of the Week: Saturday's Gulfstream Park Oaks
March 25, 2021
$200,000 GRADE 2 GULFSTREAM PARK OAKS Saturday, March 27, 2021
The Lead: A 14-race program loaded with stakes will entice horseplayers Saturday at Gulfstream Park. The national attention will be on the finale, the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby, but shrewd handicappers looking at the multi-race wagers late in the card will be giving as much attention to the lead-ins. The Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks in Race 12 is part of all of the late-day multi-race bets and appears to have a trustworthy key.
Field Depth: None of the 7 entrants are graded stakes winners, though CRAZY BEAUTIFUL is Grade 1-placed and a listed stakes winner. COMPETITIVE SPEED similarly is a listed stakes winner who has placed at the Grade 2 level. CON LIMA also has won a listed stakes and is multiple Grade 3-placed. MILLEFEUILLE is Grade 2-placed.
Pace: Rail speed CON LIMA looks loose and lonely up front with a short run to the first turn increasing her advantage. The others would have to be hustled faster than their comfort zone to keep up early, likely to their detriment.
Our Eyes: The Forward Gal and Davona Dale typically are the lead-in races at the meet for the Gulfstream Park Oaks. But Forward Gal champ Zaajel opted for last week's Fair Grounds Oaks, where she beat only 1 rival while defeated 15 lengths. Wholebodemeister, third in the Forward Gal and 6-1/2 length upset winner at 52-1 in the Davona Dale, hasn't worked since. So the Gulfstream Park Oaks series finale doesn't bring its best to the ball...and what we've seen so far hasn't dazzled in the local division.
CRAZY BEAUTIFUL, second in the Davona Dale, may be a touch better around 1 turn than 2, owing to her miler's pedigree. But this track configuration with a sixteenth-pole finish line in play has been known to carry a runner a bit farther than the paper suggests. Her first start at 3 was a modest runner-up to a bomb of a price, and she doesn't appear to have any major advantage over the rest of these to take a short price.
CON LIMA has been aces on turf throughout the winter, and with Pletcher sending Zaajel out of town a week ago, becomes his Gulfstream Park Oaks player on the surface switch. She's got a dirt pedigree, and began her career on dirt in her first 4 starts. She's been first or second in all 8 career starts no matter the surface. The pace advantage looks absolutely real here, and leading jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. hasn't missed the mark often on these types this season.
MILLEFUEILLE and COMPETITIVE SPEED both surprised in the Davona Dale; the former for her poor performance while 3-1 odds, and the latter for her surprising third at 53-1. COMPETITIVE SPEED runs like a closing sprinter and her 1-turn mile middle-move last out came up flat late.
Others in the field include BOW WOW GIRL, a course and distance maiden breaker last out behind a dawdling pace; PENS STREET, fourth in the Davona Dale at 84-1; and LEN LO LADY, a maiden claiming graduate at 1-8 lifetime.

Brown's Raging Bull, Sacred Life loom large in G1 Maker's MarkPeter Brant’s Grade 1 winner Raging Bull (FR) tops a field of nine older runners set for Friday’s $300,000 Maker’s Mark Mile (G1) to be run over the Keeneland turf course. The Maker’s Mark Mile will go as the afternoon’s ninth race with post time scheduled for approximately 5:30 p.m. EDT. First post time is 1:05 p.m. Trained by Chad Brown, Raging Bull will be making his 2021 debut after concluding last year with a 10th-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1). A two-time Grade 1 winner, Raging Bull finished third beaten a neck in last year’s Maker’s Mark Mile and returned in the fall to finish second in the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1). Irad Ortiz Jr. will have the mount and break from post eight. Brown also will send out Sacred Life (FR) for the ownership of Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, Wonder Stable and Bethlehem Stables. Fourth in the $1 million Turf Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs last September in his most recent start, Sacred Life will be ridden by Javier Castellano and break from post four. Invading from California and riding a four-race win streak is Hit the Road, winner of the Frank Kilroe Mile (G1) in his most recent start. Trained by Dan Blacker for the partnership of D K Racing, Radley Equine, Taste of Victory Stables, Rick Gold, Tony Maslowski and Dave Odmark, Hit the Road will break from post two and be ridden by Florent Geroux, who was aboard for the Kilroe victory.

Arkansas Derby (G1) — Race 12 (7:41 p.m. ET)
Although Bob Baffert hasn’t dominated the Arkansas Derby (G1) like he has the Rebel (G2), the Hall of Fame conditioner will be heavily favored to carry off the hardware in Saturday’s $1 million renewal of the 1 1/8-mile Derby at Oaklawn Park, with stable companions Concert Tour and Hozier comprising one-third of the field.
Four weeks ago, Concert Tour provided Baffert with his eighth victory in the Rebel since 2010, while Hozier was 4 1/4 lengths behind in second. Those two will command most of the wagering attention in the final Road to the Kentucky Derby series prep of 2021, which will award qualifying points of 100-40-20-10 to the top four finishers.
By virtue of his dominating Rebel performance, in which he improved his record to three wins from as many starts, Concert Tour earned enough points, 50, to earn a slot in the May 1 Kentucky Derby (G1). With a strong performance on Saturday, though, the son of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense could put himself in the discussion as a potential favorite on the first Saturday in May, when Baffert will look to win the Derby for a record seventh time.
Hozier, who earned 20 points in finishing second in the Rebel in his stakes debut, would need to run third or better in the Arkansas Derby to ensure a slot at Churchill Downs in three weeks. He’s a son of Pioneerof the Nile, whose son American Pharoah was one of three previous Arkansas Derby winners for Baffert. Baffert also won with Bodemeister (2012), and last year saddled Charlatan and Nadal to win the Derby’s two divisions, though Charlatan was subsequently disqualified due to a medication positive.
Caddo River, who crushed the opposition by more than 10 lengths in the Smarty Jones S. in January, was outrun by Concert Tour in the Rebel, in which he retreated to fifth as the 6-5 favorite. Farther back in seventh was Get Her Number, who was making his first start since taking the American Pharoah (G1) at Santa Anita in late September.
In out-finishing Caddo River and Get Her Number in the Rebel, Super Stock easily outran expectations as a 40-1 chance, but the colt’s only win in seven starts occurred in a restricted stakes at Lone Star last summer and he’ll be cool on the board again Saturday. The field is rounded out by Last Samurai, who was outrun in the Southwest (G3) and a preceding allowance following a maiden win at Churchill Downs in late September.
