The Mattress Mack Effect
Back in May, the big news in betting on World Series odds was provided by ... who else, Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale. The outgoing Houston furniture store magnate dropped $3 million at Caesars Sports on his beloved Astros, at +1000. Should the Astros, currently the +380 second choice at Caesars, claim the championship, McIngvale would net $30 million on that wager.
But McIngvale has other wagers out there with other operators, including a $2 million play on Astros +500 with BetMGM. That's potentially $10 million in liability.
"Mattress Mack has taken over just about all of our liability for the World Series," Egeland said. "We're pretty balanced overall, with the exception of the Astros."
Houston, the defending AL champion, opened +800 in odds to win the 2022 World Series. BetMGM took Mattress Mack's $2 million wager on July 21. The 'Stros are currently the +350 second choice at BetMGM, behind the Dodgers at +275.
The Astros (106-56) posted the AL's best record. Houston faces Seattle in the ALDS.

Notable bets: Upsets, $1.05 million loss fuel brutal Sunday for betting public
Sunday featured the largest upset of the season so far, a slew of games that were lower scoring than expected and a trifecta of $300,000 bets that were unsuccessful. Indeed, it was a good day to be the house.
Four NFL underdogs won outright in the early Sunday slate of games, highlighted by the Pittsburgh Steelers upending Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as 9.5-point favorites. The Steelers hadn't been that big of a home underdog since 1970.
At sportsbook PointsBet, 96% of the dollars bet on the game's money line was on Tampa Bay, and at Caesars, the Buccaneers' money line (-455) was included in more parlays than any other wager.
"People thought it was a free bingo space," Adam Pullen, assistant director of trading for Caesars Sportsbook, said. "Throw it on there and it can't lose."
The Steelers won 20-18.
The New York Jets upset Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers as 7.5-point underdogs in the third-biggest upset of the season. Sunday marked the 32nd time Brady and Rodgers had been favored by at least a touchdown in the same week. Sunday was the first time they both lost on the same day in that situation, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
The New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons also pulled off outright upsets -- and one bettor with DraftKings nailed all four of the early upsets on a $20 four-leg money-line parlay that paid $2,810.31.
"It was a very good [Sunday]," Johnny Avello, DraftKings sportsbook director, said.
NFL notables
A bettor in Nevada with Caesars Sportsbook placed three $300,000-plus bets:
• $390,000 on Jaguars +3 (-130)
• $330,000 on Buccaneers -8
• $330,000 on Browns -2.5
All three lost for a total of $1.05 million.

"This line opened with the Patriots listed as a 6.5-point home favorite. Currently 68% of bets and 69% of money is laying the points with New England. This lopsided one-way action has steamed the Pats up from -6.5 to -8. Some books are hinting at a further move up to -8.5 or even higher. Brad Allen, the lead referee, is 56% ATS to the home team historically."

Jim 'Mattress Mack' McIngvale is four wins from record $75 million payout on World Series bet
This year McIngvale has $10 million on the Astros, and he’s just four wins from winning $75 million after they swept the Yankees to advance to the World Series.
The only thing between him and what would be the largest recorded payout in legal sports betting history are the Philadelphia Phillies.
